Assignment Types & Requirements
Narrative Discussion Posts
- Overview: Weekly written discussion posts tied to textbook readings.
- The Narrative Discussion Posts, “5-3-2 Rule”: 5 sentences for the prompt, 3 replies, 2 noteworthy quotes.
- Components:
1. Respond to ONE prompt in exactly 5 polished sentences. Proper punctuation counts!
2. Reply thoughtfully to 3 classmates, including their names for each one.
3. Provide 2 noteworthy quotes from 2 additional classmates, including their names.
- Writing strategies: academic yet conversational tone, employ your sociological imagination, and a value-free approach.
- Read, edit, read, edit, revise, and THEN submit: Use Grammarly and/or spell checker.
Video Discussion Posts
- Purpose: A candid, podcast‑style 60‑second talk. ( >45 seconds, < 70 seconds )
- Jump right into the topic (no self-intros after DP1).
- Technical requirements: film in landscape, links only, check audio/video against the grading rubric.
- Components mirror narrative posts: your video, 3 replies, 2 quotes.
- Must be unscripted; reading from a script results in deductions.
- You may use a few notes, but IT IS OBVIOUS WHEN YOU ARE READING
- Start strong and end strong. Do not end with "yeah" or cut the sentence off.
- Check final video against the grading rubric.
Audio Discussion Posts
- Purpose: 60‑second unscripted audio response. ( >45 seconds, < 70 seconds )
- No intro necessary, and do not restate the prompt, as it should be obvious what you are talking about.
- Same 3 components as video posts: One post, three replies, and two quotes.
- Must be unscripted; reading from a script results in deductions.
- You may use a few notes, but IT IS OBVIOUS WHEN YOU ARE READING
- Start strong and end strong. Do not end with "yeah" or cut the sentence off.
- Check final video against the grading rubric.
Grading Rubrics & Expectations
- Evaluated on clarity, grammar, structure, timing, and adherence to rules. Use the rubric!
- Videos/audios must be between 45 seconds and 1:10 (target 60 seconds).
- Must interact with 5 different classmates (3 replies + 2 quotes).
- Point deductions (see grading rubric) occur for:
• Missing or extra sentences.
• Reading a script.
• Vertical video.
• Link is not viable.
• Timing outside allowed range.
- You access your discussion posts, edit, add content, all the way until the date/time it is due.
Exams
- 90 minutes per exam.
- Multiple choice based on the study guide.
- Must be completed in one sitting.
Grade Groveling Policy
- End-of-semester begging for higher grades will not be entertained.
What Makes an A/B/C Student?
- "A" students: consistent, prepared, deep understanding, high-quality work.
- "B" students: solid but less consistent or thorough.
- "C" students: minimal effort, reactive rather than proactive.
Organization Skills Checklist
